Coping With Holiday Grief

When you're grieving, holiday can make you even more aware of your sadness. Here are some ideas to make the season easier:
ACCEPT YOUR FEELINGS: Don't force yourself to be merry. On the other hand, don't deny yourself the enjoyment of celebrations.
EXPRESS YOUR FEELINGS: Talk to friends and family about your feelings. If you're unsure whether you'll want to participate in certain events, let people know. You may want to decide from day-to-day what you feel comfortable with.
CONSIDER CHANGES: Some holiday traditions may bring you comfort. Others may cause pain. Consider new options. And if you feel overwhelmed, give yourself permission to cut back on your preparations this year. Don't feel like you still have to make a perfect holiday for others. But don't completely withdraw from all holiday activities. Be sure to maintain contact with at least some friends and family and enjoy their support.
HONOR YOUR LOVED ONE: Light a candle, make a donation or hang an ornament in memory of your loved one. Reflect on that person's life and what it meant to you.
