Facing the challenge of change
Becoming a parent.
Relocating to a new city.
Stating a new job.
Beginning life alone after a death or divorce.
Adjusting to an "empty nest" after your children leave.
If you're dealing with one of these major changes - whether welcome or
unwelcome - managing your stress is more important now than ever before. Too much stress can be bad for your health. When you're stressed, your body's immune system may become suppressed and make you more likely to get sick.
To keep stress under control during a difficult time, try these tips from
the National Mental Health Association.
REACH OUT to friends and family to help you through the rough patches. Share your feelings with them. If they live far away, stay in touch by phone or e-mail.
KEEP YOUR STRENGTH UP. That means eating right, exercising regularly and avoiding drugs and alcohol. Make sleep a priority. Constant fatigue from lack of sleep can be a trigger for depression.
PROTECT YOUR TIME. If you feel overwhelmed, eliminate activities that aren't absolutely necessary.
HAVE RELALISTIC EXPECTATIONS. It may be more difficult to cope with everyday demands while you're adjusting to a life change. If your having trouble, work on one task at a time. Once you've completed it, start another.
FIND TIME FOR RELAXATION, such as deep breathing, long walks, warm baths. Meditation or visualization.
Ask for help if you feel overwhelmed by stressful life changes. Turn to your
doctor, employee assistance professional, mental health counselor or clergy.
