8 ways to prevent dog bites

Did you know that more than 4 million Americans are bitten by dogs each
year? Though most dogs will never bite anyone, any dog may bite if it feels
threatened. Protect yourself and your family with these tips.

Before buying a dog, research the best breed for your situation. If you have
small children, for example, you'll want a family-friendly breed. Ask a
veterinarian or other families with dogs for suggestions.

Train your dog with a firm, loving approach. Teach it respect by letting it
know your in charge.

Don't disturb a dog that's eating, sleeping, or caring for puppies. Don't
try to intervene physically when two dogs are fighting.

Never leave an infant or young child along with a dog.

Have your dog spayed or neutered. This can make it less aggressive.

Report stray dogs to local law enforcement agencies.

Never approach an unfamiliar dog. If an unfamiliar dog approaches you, stand
still with your feet together and arms crossed your chest. Avoid direct eye
contact.

Never run from or scream at an approaching dog. The dog may become excited
and act aggressively.

Children are the most common victims of dog bites. If you have children,
teach them to stay away from strange dogs, and talk to them about how to
avoid being bitten.
