When anxiety overwhelms you

Many people have experienced feelings of anxiety since the events of
September 11, 2001, and beyond. It's normal to be somewhat anxious about this and other stresses in your life.

But for some people, persistent, excessive worry is hard to control-and not
just as it relates to recent events. That level of worry can begin to affect daily life. It may be a sign of a pervasive problem called generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).

With GAD, you feel anxious most days, usually without a clear cause, for
month. Your anxiety may make it hard for you to function at home or work. You may experience:

trembling, dizziness, fatigue, trouble concentrating, muscle tension, trouble sleeping, chest pain, a "lump" in your throat, fast breathing, stomachache, diarrhea, headache, dry mouth, sweaty palms, irritability, restlessness, a fear that something bad is about to happen

Fortunately, GAD can be treated with behavior therapy and medications.

Behavior therapy helps you understand your anxiety triggers and develop coping skills. Medications also are highly effective against GAD.

Antidepressants that have anti-anxiety properties are common choices. Some people also benefit from short-term or occasional use of anti-anxiety drugs. They're not meant for chronic use.

If you suspect you have generalized anxiety disorder, see your doctor. Treatment is available, and it's covered by most health plans.

How to cope with the anxieties of daily life?

If anxiety is getting to you, try some of these coping strategies.

BREAK THE CYCLE.
When you start to feel anxious, identify positive ways to cope with the situation.

TALK TO SOMEONE.
Share your problems with a friend or counselor who can help you gain
perspective.

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF.
Get enough rest, eat a balanced diet, exercise and take time to relax. Avoid caffeine and nicotine, which can worsen anxiety. Don't turn to alcohol for relief.
