Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance (APALA)

The Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance, AFL-CIO, is the first and only national organization of Asian Pacific American union members.
It continues a tradition dating from the mid-1800s of workers fighting for justice in the sugar plantations of Hawaii, the factories of Alaska, and the railroad and agricultural camps of the western United States.
This struggle continues today, as Asian Pacific American workers, many of them immigrants, strive to achieve the American dream in the face of unsafe and exploitative workplace conditions.
More than half a million Asian Pacific American workers have joined unions, seeking better pay, improved benefits, dignity on the job, and a voice in the work place.
On May 1, 1992, hundreds of Asian Pacific American union activists and their supporters joined together to form APALA.
Backed with the strong support of the AFL-CIO, APALA has emerged as a voice for Asian Pacific American workers in the labor movement, in the APA community, in the media, and in the national public policy arena.
